Development Plans

Elairo's Development Plans feature, part of the Formation module, empowers individuals and teams to foster continuous growth and skill enhancement. Development Plans are a structured approach to identifying areas for improvement, setting actionable goals, and tracking progress towards professional development. They are particularly effective when created in response to insights gained from Performance Reviews or 360 Evaluations.

Components of a Development Plan

Each Development Plan in Elairo is designed to be comprehensive and actionable, typically including:

  • Goals: Specific, measurable objectives for development.

  • Actions: Concrete steps to achieve the development goals.

  • Check-ins: Scheduled reviews to discuss progress and provide feedback.

  • Mentors: Assigned individuals who can provide guidance and support.

Creating a Development Plan

You can create a Development Plan for yourself or for direct reports.

Step-by-Step: Initiating a Development Plan

  1. Navigate to Development Plans: From the Elairo main menu, click on 'Formation' and then select 'Development Plans'.

  2. Add New Plan: Click the "Create New Plan" button.

  3. Select User: Choose the individual for whom the plan is being created. If you are creating it for yourself, your name will be pre-selected.

  4. Define Plan Name & Duration: Give the plan a descriptive title (e.g., "Q3 Leadership Development") and set a start and end date.

  5. Add Overall Goals: Based on performance reviews or identified development areas, articulate the main objectives of this plan. For example, "Improve public speaking skills" or "Develop project management expertise." Click "Save & Continue."

Adding Actionable Items and Support

Once the core plan is established, you can enrich it with specific details.

  1. Adding Development Goals:

    • Within the Development Plan, click "Add Development Goal."

    • Enter a clear, measurable goal. For example, "Successfully lead two team stand-ups per week for 8 consecutive weeks."

    • Assign a target completion date.

    • (Optional) Link this goal to a relevant OKR if it aligns with broader company objectives.

    • Click "Save Goal."

  2. Adding Actions to Goals:

    • Under each Development Goal, click "Add Action."

    • Describe the specific step needed to achieve the goal (e.g., "Attend Toastmasters workshops twice a month," "Complete 'Project Management Professional' online course").

    • Assign a responsible person (usually the plan owner) and a due date.

    • You can also add notes or link to relevant resources here.

    • Click "Save Action."

  3. Assigning a Mentor:

    • In the plan overview, locate the "Mentor" section.

    • Click "Assign Mentor" and select an Elairo user who can provide guidance and support. This could be a manager, a senior colleague, or someone with expertise in the development area.

    • The mentor will receive a notification and gain visibility into the plan's progress.

Tracking Progress and Check-ins

Effective tracking is crucial for the success of any Development Plan.

Updating Action Progress

  • Plan owners and managers can update the status of individual actions (e.g., "Not Started," "In Progress," "Completed," "On Hold").

  • Click on an action item to open its details and change the status. Add comments to provide context on progress or challenges.

Scheduling and Conducting Check-ins

Check-ins provide structured opportunities for discussion and feedback.

  1. Schedule Check-in: Within the Development Plan, click "Schedule Check-in."

  2. Set Date & Time: Choose a date and time for the meeting.

  3. Add Attendees: Invite the plan owner, manager, and mentor.

  4. Prepare Agenda: Briefly outline the topics for discussion (e.g., "Review progress on public speaking goal," "Discuss challenges with course material").

  5. Conduct Meeting: During the check-in, review progress, discuss challenges, adjust plans as necessary, and document decisions. Elairo provides a dedicated space within the check-in record for notes and action items. These can be linked to existing actions within the plan or create new ones.

Best Practices for Development Plans

  • Align with Evaluations: Use feedback from Performance Reviews and 360 Evaluations to identify key development areas.

  • SMART Goals: Ensure all development goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

  • Regular Check-ins: Schedule consistent check-ins to monitor progress, provide encouragement, and address roadblocks.

  • Active Mentorship: Encourage mentors to engage actively, offer advice, and share experiences.

  • Be Flexible: Development is an ongoing journey. Be prepared to adjust goals and actions as circumstances change or new opportunities arise.

  • Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate achievements, no matter how small, to maintain motivation.

By leveraging Elairo's Development Plans, you can create a culture of continuous learning and growth, helping individuals and your organization thrive.
