Key Results & Progress
Key Results (KRs) are measurable outcomes that define the success of an Objective. In Elairo, effectively managing and tracking the progress of your Key Results is crucial for understanding whether you're on track to achieve your overarching Objectives. This guide will walk you through updating progress, understanding different progress methods, and interpreting status indicators.
Understanding Key Results
Each Objective in Elairo will have one or more Key Results associated with it. KRs provide the "how" to achieve your Objective's "what." They should be ambitious yet realistic, and always quantifiable.
For more information on setting effective KRs, refer to Creating OKRs and OKR Best Practices.
Updating Key Result Progress
Keeping your Key Results updated is vital for accurate team performance tracking and informed decision-making. Elairo offers two primary methods for updating KR progress: Manual and Milestone-based.
Manual Progress Updates
The Manual progress method is flexible and ideal for KRs where progress is tracked incrementally or when you need full control over the percentage completed.
How to update manually:
Navigate to the OKRs section from the main navigation.
Locate the Objective that contains the Key Result you wish to update.
Click on the Key Result. This will open its detail view.
In the progress section, you will see a field to input the current value or percentage.
Enter the updated value. For example, if your KR is "Increase customer satisfaction score from 7.0 to 9.0," and the current score is 8.0, you would input "8.0". Elairo will automatically calculate the percentage complete based on your start and target values.
Add a brief comment explaining the update. This is highly recommended for context and transparency (e.g., "Updated based on Q3 survey results").
Click Save or Update Progress.
Tip: Regular, small updates are more valuable than infrequent, large ones. Aim to update your KRs at least weekly, or as frequently as new data becomes available.
Milestone-Based Progress Updates
Milestone-based progress is designed for Key Results that are achieved by completing a series of distinct, sequential steps or tasks. This method automatically calculates progress based on the completion of associated milestones.
How to set up and update with milestones:
When creating or editing a Key Result, select the "Milestone" progress method.
Define your milestones. For each milestone:
Give it a clear name (e.g., "Complete market research," "Develop prototype," "Launch beta program").
Set a target date (optional, but recommended).
Assign a weight (optional, but useful if some milestones contribute more significantly to the KR's overall progress).
As each milestone is completed, navigate to the Key Result's detail view.
Mark the corresponding milestone as Complete.
Elairo will automatically calculate the Key Result's overall progress based on the completed milestones and their weights.
Example for a Milestone KR:
Objective: Enhance the Elairo user onboarding experience.
Key Result: Reduce new user setup time by 20%.
Milestones:
Map current onboarding flow (Weight: 20%)
Identify pain points and opportunities (Weight: 30%)
Design and prototype new flow (Weight: 20%)
Implement and test new flow (Weight: 30%)
As each milestone is marked complete, the KR's progress will update automatically.
Understanding Key Result Status Indicators
Elairo uses intuitive status indicators to provide a quick visual overview of a Key Result's health and trajectory. These indicators help you identify KRs that require attention.
On Track (Green): The Key Result is progressing as expected or ahead of schedule. The current progress percentage is aligned with or exceeds the expected progress for the given time.
At Risk (Yellow): The Key Result is falling behind schedule, but there's still time to recover. The current progress is notably below the expected progress, but not critically so. This is a warning sign to take action.
Behind (Red): The Key Result is significantly behind schedule and requires immediate intervention. The current progress is far below the expected progress, indicating a high likelihood of not meeting the target.
Achieved (Blue/Purple): The Key Result has met or exceeded its target value. Congratulations!
Not Started (Grey): The Key Result has been created but no progress has been recorded yet.
Tip: Pay close attention to "At Risk" and "Behind" KRs. These are opportunities for discussion with your team, identifying roadblocks, and adjusting strategies. Consider linking relevant tasks from your Task Board Overview to these KRs to ensure effort is being directed appropriately.
By effectively managing your Key Results and understanding their progress, your team can maintain focus, adapt quickly, and ultimately achieve ambitious goals.
